Are senior pictures a big deal?

A letter to parents

That’s why I care so deeply about the work I do as a senior photographer. Because I know how quickly the “lasts” come—the last first day of school, the last time they live full-time under your roof, the last moments before they set off to chase the life you’ve spent years preparing them for.

As a senior photographer, I spend my days capturing more than just pretty pictures. What I truly photograph is this incredible moment in your child’s life—the threshold between who they’ve been and who they’re becoming. It’s a season of joy, transformation, nostalgia, and pride. And it deserves to be documented with intention.

Senior pictures aren't just for your senior. They are for you as well. They’re for the nights you miss them so much it physically aches, and you need to see that smile, the one that’s all theirs. The one that’s still your baby. These images will live on your walls, in your heart, and in their hands as they move forward. They’ll remind you of the spark in their eyes, the confidence in their smile, and the way they lit up your world just by being in it. There is something magical about senior sessions, which is why I think they are my favorite. They are somehow both full of youth, sparkle and mature all at the same time.

When I plan destination sessions—whether it’s in Malibu, Sedona, Olympic National Park, New York City, or another place that feels special—I’m thinking about more than a beautiful backdrop. Choosing a destination session is about giving your senior a space to feel celebrated. A chance to express themselves freely, beautifully, and boldly. And it’s about creating an experience you’ll both remember forever. These sessions are designed to feel like a once-in-a-lifetime adventure—because this time in their life is. And for you to feel proud, supported, and at peace knowing this moment won’t be lost to time.

I approach every session like I would want someone to approach my own child’s one day—with heart, care, creativity, and attention to the details that matter most. I want your images to feel like a piece of art. I work closely with each family to plan every detail, from styling and locations to travel and timing, so all you have to do is show up and soak it in. Whether we’re chasing sunsets in Malibu, wandering the canyons of Sedona, or exploring hidden corners of New York City, I make sure your senior feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

Because at the end of the day, these photos are more than images. They’re legacy.

So if you’re on the fence about senior portraits, I’ll gently encourage you: do it. For them. For you. For all the memories wrapped up in this once-in-a-lifetime season.

With warmth & gratitude,
Alex Hoedebecke

Dear Parents,

I know how fast it goes. As a mom myself-of an imaginative 7-year-old and a wild little 2-year old-I think about time a lot. How fast it moves. How we're always catching up to it. How each season of our children's lives feels both ordinary and extraordinary at the same time.

And even though I haven't parented a senior yet, I get glimpses of what's coming. The growing independence. The shifting conversations. The way they slowly begin to pull away-while you hold onto every moment a little tighter.
